Mt. Kailash, the name refers to Lord Shiva, taken as the sacred mountain. Hindu epic has mentioned this as the navel of the earth. This holy mountain is situated in the south west corner of Tibet at an elevation of 6714 m. This is the place regarded as the heaven, said to have been meditated by the supreme god, Shiva. Hindu believes that Mt. Kailash is the abode of Lord Shiva. There are other religions, which pay their great homage to Kailash interpreting in their own way. Hindu says, this is the domain of Shiva (Destroyer and Transformer), Buddhist believes, Kailash is the abode of Samvara (A multi-armed wrathful deity), Tibetan takes it as Khang Rinpoche or ‘precious jewel of the snow’, and Bonpo and Jains have illustrated Kailash differently.

Kailash is the great source of four great rivers which flow in four different directions. The Karnali falls into the Ganges (South), Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra, east), Sutlej (west), and Indus (north). The credit goes to these rivers for the ancient civilizations.

There are two Lakes on the lap of Mt. Kailash: Mansarovar and Mapham Tso (Victorious Lake). It is said that Lord Brahma, the creator of Hindu god, created Mansarovar in his sons’ request. So, the Hindus take holy baths get rid of the sins of hundred life time. Hindus and Buddhists make Kora (circumambulation) around the lake as pilgrimage.
