There was a time when visitors came to Kathmandu solely to marvel at its fine art and architecture. Nowadays, they also drop in to admire the scenery at its modern shopping centers. What make Kathmandu such a great place to stock up on international brand merchandise are the better prices you get here. Overhead costs are lower in Kathmandu, so dealers can offer cheaper rates for genuine products. Moreover, there are authorized dealers for a wide range of designer products and you can be sure you are getting the genuine article.

The craftsmen of the Kathmandu valley were well respected at the royal court of China in ancient times. The very same crafts which earned them fame are practiced here today, side by side with their modern brothers and sisters. To step into a Kathmandu valley workshop is to step back in time 400 years. And those items which you bring home with you will forever link you to the days of exotic courts and arduous trade routes.

Boudha is 6 km far from Kathmandu, the circular sanctuary of the Boudhanath Stupa where traditional houses with shops displaying Nepalese handicrafts and Tibetan Curios. Short and long brass and copper trumpets, yak tails, incense, gems, carpets, thangkas, handlooms, garments, brocades, butter lamps and many other endearing knick- knacks abound here.

The place where you can get better prices, the place where overhead costs are lower and you can get the genuine article, handmade, branded, or from the authorized dealers. The most popular, hustling, bustling shopping area in the capital is the New Road vicinity. New Road-Bishal Bazaar-Khicha Pokhari form the apex of modern shopping in Kathmandu. The locale is right next to Durbar Square, the old Royal Palace complex with several temples, which is often the starting point for sightseeing in the city. So, visitors can easily combine a cultural tour with satisfying indulgence in shopping. The variety of restaurants and coffee shops in the area can add culinary pleasure to your purchasing spree. The famous local market in the capital is Bhotahity, Asan, and Indrachowk where we can get many shops selling varieties of spices, local products, pots, textiles etc. Taking home such a package is like taking home a piece of Nepalese culture. It affords an opportunity for visitors to relieve their Nepal experience in their own kitchens and dining rooms. We can then go northward to Chhetrapati and its arcades, and then reach Thamel, the ultimate destination for riotous Nepalese-made cotton garments, woolen mittens and cardigans, ‘tiger mouth ‘purses, Nepalese designer jackets, apparels and carpets. Another ‘must’ destination is the Durbar Marga, beginning from the main gate of the Royal Palace. This chic boulevard is replete with elite gem and curio emporiums to top notch craft and art galleries. Swoyambhu, 3 km west from Thamel is yet another destination, perched on the conical shaped hill for finding butter lamp, prayer flags, some Tibetan items, metal items, Thankas, some other scenic paintings by local artists etc. Boudhanath about 7 km to the east of Kathmandu is famous for buying Nepalese and Tibetan curios, short and long brass and copper trumpets, yak tails, incense, gems, carpets, handlooms, garments, brocades and silks etc. After shopping we return back to hotel.
